Bruce Wayne was born into a socially prominent family. His father was the most famous doctor in Gotham. One night the Wayne Family went to see the film "The Mark of Zorro". When they were going back to Wayne Manor, a thief called Joe Chill killed Thomas and Martha Wayne. Bruce swore to himself that he would take revenge against all criminals. He trained his body and his mind during his youth to become a detective. He's the best detective in the world, and he is an expert in chemistry, all sciences, literature, art, history, criminology, and all sorts of esoteric martial arts.

He used to work alone in the night until he saw a pair of trapeze artists fall to their deaths, orphaning a child called Dick Grayson. Bruce became his guardianand tutor, and revealed his secret to Dick. Dick was trained in acrobatics since he was a child, so he had no problems becoming the first Robin. Batman and Robin worked together for a long time. But when Dick Grayson was 19, he decided to change his hero identity to "Nightwing" and live in New York, becoming the leader of the Teen Titans.

Batman then worked alone for a while, until he adopted a boy called Jason Todd, who (of course) became the new Robin. Jason trained hard to be ready to help Batman and he was his partner for a long time. But the Joker killed him. Bruce promised to himself that he would never have a young partner, again.

This incident make Batman a dark and violent hero. As Alfred (Bruce's butler) said to Nightwing ,"he began thinking with his knuckles instead of his brain". Batman used before to get information by a detective process; now he was getting information by scaring all the criminals and sending them to the hospital. But there was an intelligent kid who realized all these changes in Batman's methods: Tim Drake. Tim, Alfred and Nightwing helped Batman to return to the right way. Then Tim convinced Bruce Wayne that Robin was necessary to control Batman's actions, and finally Tim become the actual Robin.

One of the worst moments in Bruce's life was when a scientist called Randolph Porter provided Batman a drug to give him a incredible strength (so Batman would not have to spend timetraining). But the drug (called Venom) was so addictive that Batman was near to being controlled by Potter. Bruce had to stay shut in the BatCave for more than a month while his mind was fighting against the drug in his veins.

Recently a villain appeared called Bane, who uses a variant of Venom to get super-strength. Bane nearly killed Batman; he broke Batman's back, in fact, making him unable to walk. He had to be replaced by Jean Paul Valley (a.k.a. Azrael) while he was recovering the use of his legs. When he was OK, he had to reclaim the name of Batman from the now-insane Valley.

Alfred is not only his butler, but also is his best friend, his accomplice, his doctor, and helps Bruce in all his investigations (Alfred is a good detective).

Batman has no powers, but as Bruce Wayne has so much money that he spends a great part of his fortune making machines to help him: The Batmobile, The BatPlane, The BatBoat, the Batarang, his Bat-belt, Bat-costume, Bat-computer ... and so on. He also has trained under many masters of fighting techniques and has mastered everything he has come to learn. He is in peak human form. His most powerful weapon still is his brain however and perhaps that is what makes him the most powerful hero in the Universe along as within the JLA.
